Thanks to the Federal government’s “Cash for Clunkers” program, the All Star Dodge Dealership in Livingston Parish has become an unlikely scene for protesting activists. Since last Thursday, members of the group “People for the Ethical Treatment of Automobiles” (PETA) have been holding a vigil outside the All Star’s garage to protest what they believe to be cruel and inhumane means of execution for vehicles traded in under the federal program.
According to this story, All Star Dodge has been the scene of 21 such executions thus far. The protestors argue that the proscribed method of execution, that of lethal injection with the chemical sodium silicate, causes a slow and painful death to the vehicles. It takes several minutes of running the engine after the injection for the car to be pronounced dead by the attending mechanic. During this time, the poor car’s agonistic cries become progressively loduer as it fights to hang on to its precious life.
Referring to the elderly models that populate the dealership’s death row, one protestor commented, “these are the most vulnerable members of the species. They could go another 100,000 miles given the proper care and nurturing.”
“It’s absolutely sickening,” says another, “using a place of healing (a garage) for such things.”
Another protestor referred to the situation as a veritable crisis. “If these killings are not put to an immediate halt, it will drive the 1987 Chevrolet Silverado Pickup into total extinction. These vehicles have done nothing wrong; it’s not their fault that they get low gas mileage. As usual, we are punishing the innocent mechanisms of this planet for what people have done.”
So, it seems, this group is pushing instead for execution of the engineers who deliberately and with malice aforethought designed these gas-guzzling behemoths.

OMG! Oh Noes! Those eeeevul Democrats are pulling the plug on Granny(’s Oldsmobile)!

AAWWW- I actually feel sorry for the terrible demise of such long & loyal autos that serviced so many families. My daughter & her dog hung their heads out the door of my 1970′ Buick so the fresh air would blow their hair. (thats when I accidently closed the automatic window on her head) Once my 1976 Mercury saved my life when it became amphibious during street flooding. These autos were our bread & butter, getting us to & fro upon demand, asking only that we fuel & maintain them routinely !!Not much to ask if you consider that small towns never have alternative transportation. Think I will take time to look back furthur & reminise. Also think I will keep my 2003 Towncar. Hey –I get 23 miles per gallon & I only have 35,000 miles on it.The longest I have ever owned a car!! Its part of the family by now. Nobody had better call it a clunker !!! AAARRRR

I say we donate them all to cave explorers. We can call the program Clunkers for Spelunkers.

Awww. What a crying shame. I can’t look at any more of this torture! I think we should also demand that they change the name from clunkers to “road kittens”. Maybe then they would think twice about killing them…then again probably not.
